"I volunteer as tribute!"
Heads spin. Eyes widen.
The crowd parts as I make my way on the the platform.
My dress rustles as I walk, breaking the silence.
Silence of shock? Admiration? Confusion?
I'm not sure. I know I 've done the right thing.
"Ladies and gentlemen, a round of appluase for this years volunteer tribute for District One, Success Satin."
The escort, Avocina Treplum claps for about half a second and then grabs my arm.
Then we're taken to the Justice
Building
The door slams closed behind my family as they burst through the door. "Success. I'm so proud." My mother whispers. "You'll win the games and bring pride to our family, our district." I stand back. My sister Victory, she's 12 wraps her arms around my waist. "Of course you'll win. You can kill with a spear from 60 feet away. " She laughs. "True.." I shrug. My older brother Onyx grins. "Success, stop being modest." I suppose I have a pretty good chance. Onyx volunteered 2 years ago, when he was 17 and won.
"No, I don't know. There's been some alright tributes from the outlines in the last couple years." I say, weighing it up. "Get a spear," my mother repeats "and you'll win. You know you will." A Peacekeeper speaks from the corner of the room. "Times up." He opens the door. "Success!" Victory screeches. "Aeternum et semper."
The door slams and I'm left with my thoughts. "Success." I whip around and hug Kassia, my best friend. "Success, listen to me. Your coming back. " I break away. "I- I know, of course. I have to don't I?" She smiles "We're so proud." We sit down on the windowsill and just.. Small talk > . Then Kassia is asked to leave. "Wait, Success, your token." I point to my earrings and smile sadly. "Okay. See you in a month." She walks out the door. "For sure." I reply. "And, Success?" I turn around again. "Kass?" The door slams and I scream. "Kass! Kassia wait!". The Peacekeepers inject something into my arm and all I see is blood, the colour of my dress.
Looking out the window, all I see is a blur. 200 miles an hour and yet we feel nothing. What should I feel? Worried, anxious. Nope. Excited, maybe.
I drink a hot chocolate, just becuase its there. It's quite similar to the stuff we drink at home. Coffee. And when a Captiol attendant cuts me a slice of cake, I dont object. With no'one to talk to and not wanting to be left to my own thoughts, I eat and eat. Crossaints, jellys, fruit, even a curry dish. It could be the last time I eat properly. Until I'm out of the arena that is. Becuase I will come out. Alive and crowned Victor.
"We've arrived in the Capitol, Success." The attendant informs me.
I know what to do know. Stand up, smile wave act happy. I fix on my fascinator. "Wow." I murmur. Waving frantically, I get smiles back. Hands in the form of a heart. Roses thrown. Pointing at me .
At me!
This is the best day so far of my life. Definetely the best until I'm crowned victor. What if I'm not? There's 24 of us, only one comes out. But..."something keeps me holding on to nothing"
It's what I've always wanted, but now that I'm here it doesn't seem the same.
